Marriott Venue Cancelled
Laura Brink
Revenue Manager
Marriott
Key Largo
Bay
Resort
103800 Overseas Highway
Key Largo,
Florida
33037
P (305) 453-0000 F (305) 451-6054
Months ago the reunion committee began making preparations for our 50th High School Reunion
celebration. A survey was sent out with questions pertaining to the site, month, attendance and by a margin
the Key Largo Marriott venue was chosen with Homestead close behind.
The staff at Key Largo Marriott Hotel was most gracious in working with us with the telephone calls
and prompt in emailing me the lodging info and banquet menu selections.
It was brought to our attention by a couple of the members the exorbitant prices for the
menu selections altho room prices were not that bad. I was amazed at the request for a $2000 deposit just to
secure the date for the lodging etc. and indicated so in my initial fax to the site. Never before have
I, whether in FL, NC, TN, etc., was ever required to put down a deposit to secure the room and/or meals. My
word was always good enough for all the other locations we've booked in the past. It's almost as though
there is a trust issue and that did not emit a warm presence about this reunion site, although the ladies
Denise and Laura were most cordial and am assuming their were following hotel policies.
But, that is not the reason why you are receiving this letter. As the classmates began to look over
the banquet menu there attached to that menu was a $15,000.00 fee which then immediately became as issue as
the classmates began to delve into the menu site. I guess this fee was to ensure we order enough drinks
food, etc. If that be the case then the Thursday evening venue would have also had that $15,000.00
attachment inasmuch as we had an evening of dancing, etc. (Sock Hop) planned indicated in my original phone
call to their location. Thursday, Friday is at Billy Perry's home in Homestead, Saturday and Sunday
Champagne Brunch were the dates needed thus, April 24-26, leaving after the brunch on Sunday, the 27th and
this was clearly stated in my discussions with both ladies at the site.
After much discussion with the Reunion Committee we have voted to cancel the reservation for the
weekend of April 24-26, 2008 for South Dade High School at the Key Largo Marriott. I am within the time
frame of canceling July 17, 2007 before the cut off date. I composed a letter using some of the wording that
you are now reading and on Friday sent the letter to them with a return receipt requested. I asked the
mail lady what with the weekend when she thought it might arrive and she indicated today, Saturday. Below
is an excerpt from Laura's initial letter to me.
Laura, you will note the entry from your initial email to me regarding reservations and
cancellations.
"If
cancellation of this booking becomes necessary, to avoid forfeiture of any deposits paid or payment of
penalties, the hotel must receive written notification by Tuesday, July 17, 2007".
"This sentence appeared in their letter too. I will put this letter in the mail to you tomorrow and will
send it as a return receipt requested to ensure its arrival and the cancellation of our weekend according to
your policy."
Reunion Committee:
Joan Martens
PS Do not think for one minute there is not a plan in action for that same weekend and you will be notified
as plans are made....We are well within our time frame but we are working quickly and a reminder for
pictures, etc. to be sent to Dianne. A lot of work is going to be done for this endeavor so please HURRY
with great speed, that is, if you can locate some after 50 years.
I need an email address for Carol Sue Markowitz . Last one I had was
rrindian1@onramp.com
and
rrindian1@earthlink.net. Neither of these appear to be working as they've been returned to me. Also,
Tommy Adams does not have a working email.

I have had no email address or response from Neil Turner, Jan McClung, Sandra Lanier Williams, Larry
Ledford, Inda Sullivan, James
Causey, sent him a letter, Bruce
Holland, Janice Gray, sent a letter, Yvonne Tuttle, Mike Aubke, Jim Evans, Miriam Acosta Phipps RobertR.Phipps@bellsouth.net,
Joe and Carol Marchi, Dan Eaker, dreaker@juno.com , Bill
and Carol McLean, Ellen Christensen, sent a letter. Robert Boone, Jon Bischoff, Don Alexander, Norman Boyd, Harold
Brannan, Let's see if someone else will be able to reach out to spark a bit of interest.
Look over the above list to see if you name appears on the list and a simple I'm coming will suffice with
the total # in your party. If your name does not appear on the above list, that means I didn't receive the survey
as each survey was printed out upon its arrival or you are still contemplating the trip home again to participate in
this great time of fun and we "will" have fun as the activites are being planned and some surprises too.
The Month is: April
Further details will be sent upon speaking with the Mariott Hotel, securing the date,
etc. and trying to reach the representative for South Dade. Looks like I will have to make a trip to the site on
that last detail.

Last Chance to Place Your Vote (6/22/07).
I know there
are some who may have stuffed their survey info in a corner so please retrieve it from the trash can, the
desk piled with papers or any
place else you think you might have put it so we can get the plans made with expediency....In other words,
with a quickening.
So far my friends:
72 have signed up and I know you've just forgotten to email your survey reply. Tell you what to do
to make it easy on everyone. Just complete the following 3 questions.
Name:
Address:
Phone:
Site: these are the two selections so make your choice - Homestead or Florida Keys
Month: March, April, or May
This truly is not a difficult matter to attend to and because we need to devote the rest of the time
for planning of the events, site, month, etc. it is imperative that we receive your decisions
pronto....please! I would give you the total thus far but do not want to sway your decision in any way.
Thanks again and HURRY!
|
Get The
Survey Replies Back (6/7/07)
Ok.... my friends, we are really down to the wire with getting these survey replies back. And... I
do believe some might have lost theirs, deleted it by accident
, the animals played with it or
something else that hampered the sending of the info back to the committee. Even if you will "not" be able
to attend a note (I like sweet ones) indicating your unavailability to attend our 50th that weekend other
than me thinking oh dear, did I send it, did it reach the correct email box, etc.
The committee has given you a lot of time to plan the event on your calendar and those who have
responded I'm happy to say that the tallies have been tabulated for the big event. But, what we need now
are the rest of the surveys to be sent either indicating good news of your coming or sad news telling us you
will not be able to make the trip.
Here is a preliminary posting of plans discussed for the weekend but the most important item is
securing the facility for our lodging and that is a "must" immediately. One can always cancel but better
safe than sorry.
Thursday: A "Sock Hop" at the site of our lodging.
Friday ( during the day): a walk through memory lane at South Dade Senior
High and the presentation of a plaque given by the Class of 1958. For those who are not aware, there is a
brand new South Dade Senior High School being built just south of the existing one and it is huge.
Friday afternoon/evening: Bill Olson is hosting a barbecue for the class on
his property. He has indicated that it is his gift to us but we will certainly help out in some way.
Saturday: Because many of you still have family friends, etc. here in the
Homestead area there will be time for visitation with them and shopping and anything else that you might
want to accomplish while here in SO FL.
Golf is a "high" priority of this weekend and Jim Simmons will be
coordinating that event for us so you might give him a heads up regarding your participation.
jsim@alltel.net
Saturday evening: will be the banquet and dance at a facility chosen according
to your votes.
Sunday: It would be nice for our last time to be together to have an informal
"Champagne Brunch" which will wind down the Reunion Event as we say our goodbyes until our next reunion.
Now, if this itinerary doesn't excite you I don't know what will.
As previously stated before, we need the surveys in so reservations can be
made to secure the lodging site. Right now we have a total of 84 attending and it would be wonderful to be
able to add your name to the list.
If you do not have the survey anymore, just write your name, address, how
many, the site, and the month or your choice and the rest is history. Now, how easy is that?
No pressure now, but get them in please. If you've sent yours in already
YEA!!!!!!
Thank you for your participation,
Your Reunion Committee
PS Please look over the email addresses and if you find a classmate not on
the list please email me and I will get a note out to them. AND, don't forget the pictures that Dianne has
requested.

50 Year Reunion of the South Dade
Class of 1958
This is an "Interest Survey" and is being to sent via E-Mail to members of the
South Dade High School Class of 1958. It is intended to solicit interest from our classmates to
attend the 50th Reunion that will be scheduled for the Spring or Fall of 2008. (We will avoid
the Hot Summer months of June - September).
We are in the early stages of planning this event and want to reach as
many Classmates as we can and encourage their participation. Attached to the survey is a
listing of "Known" classmates and their e-mail addresses. If you know of others not reflected
in this listing, please share the reunion information with them and let us know their names and
addresses so we might contact them directly.
Read over the survey and indicate your interest, preferences, and ideas.
At this stage, we are not asking for commitments. That will come later.
Please "CUT AND PASTE" the survey with your responses and sent back to Joan
Martens no later than April 15, 2007. If she has not heard back from you by April 6th, we will
send you a reminder.

Note: A small group of
classmates have provided suggestions for the format of this survey and will be reviewing the
collective responses. We anticipate a follow-up notice being sent to all Classmates in May.
