June 15, 2009

I am pleased to announce that plans have been finalized for the next class mini reunion.  After much research and review of cost options, the decision has been made to stay at the Residence Inn Downtown/Riverview, 90 Ripley Point Drive, Charleston, SC 29407.  Additionally, our stay will be during the week instead of a weekend in order to take advantage of substantial room-rate savings.  You can review the facility at: http://www.marriott.com/hotels/hotel-information/travel/chsri-residence-inn-charleston-downtown-riverview/.  In addition to the amenities outline on the website, a Conformation Agreement has been signed with the Inn with the following stipulations agreed to by both parties:

3 night stay, Oct. 12-14 (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday), checkout Oct. 15 (Thursday)

·       Group block of 25 one bedroom suites at $119 plus 12.5% local and state tax

·       Group block of 5 two bedroom suites at $159 plus same tax rate

·       More rooms can be added if needed, but based on availability of hotel rooms after blocked rooms are filled

·       Cutoff date for reservations at above rates is Sep. 12, 2009

·       Reservations can be canceled anytime without penalty, but no later than 24 hours before start of reservation (If hurricane in area, a reservation can be canceled without being charged a fee)

·       Meeting room close to BBQ grill and swimming pool reserved for Tuesday evening potluck/cook-out dinner

There are three ways to make a reservation:

1.    Call the hotel directly at (843) 571-7979 and ask for the South Dade High School Reunion group rate

2.    Online go to www.marriott.com/chsri and type in your arrival and departure dates.  Under group code type SHSSHSC for a one-bedroom suite or SHSSHSB for a two-bedroom suite

3.    Call Marriott Central Reservations (800) 331-3131 and ask for the South Dade High School Reunion group rate

General schedule of reunion events:

·       Monday – check-in after 4:00 p.m.; 5:30 p.m. Residence Inn complimentary social; 7:30 p.m. dinner with classmates at local restaurant

·       Tuesday -- complimentary breakfast buffet; 10:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. voluntary participation in hosted walking tour of historical Charleston; 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. potluck or cookout dinner at Residence Inn; other times on your own

·       Wednesday – complimentary breakfast buffet; golfing with classmates, sightseeing, shopping, or on your own; 5:30 p.m. Residence Inn complimentary social; 7:30 p.m. dinner with classmates at local restaurant

·       Thursday – complimentary breakfast buffet; on your own; check-out by 12 noon; depart

Information on the Monday and Wednesday night restaurant dinners, walking tour, and potluck/cookout will be provided later.  George Brown will be planning and managing the golf outing.  If you are interested in playing, please contact him at Numnum01@aol.com or phone (850) 385-6313.   If you want more information on Charleston, attached is a spreadsheet on “Things to do in Charleston” developed by Jim Owens’ daughter, or go to the Charleston Convention Center website at http://www.charlestoncvb.com/visitors/index.html and request a free visitor’s guide.

Planning this reunion and the mailings to the over 40 classmates without an email account have incurred some costs.  Additionally, there will be expenses related to the potluck/cookout dinner such as paper products and utensils.  To help pay for these expenses, I am requesting a donation of $5 per reunion attendee payable to me and sent to my address.  Unused funds will be forwarded to the person planning the mini in 2010.

There has been a lot of interest in having our mini reunion in Charleston, SC and a good turn-out is expected.  If you indicated you would not attend or did not express an interest in attending, you are still most welcomed to join your classmates.  Please consider attending and having a fun, exciting time.

 Summary of actions if attending:

1.    Make hotel reservation soonest to get above rates

2.    Send me a check for $5 per attendee and name of your spouse, significant other, and/or guests planning to attend

3.    Contact George Brown if interested in playing golf

f you encounter reservation problems or have a question, please call or send me an email.

Best regards,
